Made with Love: The birth of the cuckoo clock from the Black Forest

Roofer cuckoo clock: figure carries beams and has a beer bottle in his hand

The Black Forest cuckoo clocks from the manufacturer Anton Schneider are not made by just anyone, but by long-standing masters of their trade who embody the tradition of the cuckoo clock. Hardly anything about this product comes beyond Schonach. Schonach is a cuckoo clock.

Bellows, dials and hands come from Schonach.

The wood for the cuckoo clocks comes from surrounding forests. The linden wood mostly comes from Baden and a maximum radius of 150 kilometers.

The weights come from Hornberg, only 20 kilometers away.

The figures for the cuckoo clocks come from Ortisei in the north Italian Val Gardena.

The roofer clock with nine movements

The idea, the construction and the carving of the cuckoo clock from the Black Forest come from Anton Schneider. Managing Director Jürgen Clute, his master carver Felix Herr and his employees develop the Black Forest clock together.

"We start with a movement, collect ideas, adapt historical documents ... it can take a week or a year and it is also a bit of trial and error," says Clute.

The Dachdeckeruhr with legend and write nine movements was lovingly handmade and with great pleasure trying out new possibilities in many weeks for you.

Since the 1940 years, Anton Schneider has been using the Regula movements in his cuckoo clocks. The precise movement comes from the SBS Feintechnik, which is only a stone's throw away.

The Bellows - these are the pipes that make the cuckoo sounds - are also from Schonach. By the way, every original cuckoo clock from the Black Forest has this traditional cuckoo call.

The dials and hands of the Black Forest clocks come from the idyllic village Schonach, namely from the turning shop Pfaff. And the weights come from a village called Hornberg (also in the Schwarzwald), only 20 kilometers away.

The wood for the cuckoo clocks comes from two suppliers from Schonach who beat their wood in the surrounding woods. The limewood, which is rare in the Black Forest, comes mostly from Baden and a maximum radius of 150 kilometers.

Only the figures for the cuckoo clocks have come a little further way and for good reason: "They are traditionally always made by the families from Ortisei in the northern Italian Val Gardena. We all know these families who live on it today. They can paint very well, the quality of these figures is really extraordinary, "explains Jürgen Clute.

The semi-finished products are then assembled by a total of six homeworkers. "These are very important employees for us. Some are retired employees and all are family or historically associated with Anton Schneider cuckoo clocks. "Of course, they are all Schonacher. Cohesion is also a tradition in the Black Forest, that is what it does Cuckoo so special.

By the way, all manufacturers, suppliers and major distributors have stayed in the Club the Black Forest Clock together.
